BOX GAME BOX GAME

Rated 4 / 5 stars February 1, 2009

I loved it

I thought this was a great game. Even though there were no instructions I was still able to figure out how to move the character around and restart the levels when I did something wrong. I thought that the graphics were just fine and suitable to the game. Definitely one of my faves.

5/5 and 8/10, -1 for lack of music/sound (which isn't a great big deal), and -1 for lack of translation/instructions.

Messiah

Messiah was a weird and easy game. If there was a room full of enemies, you'd just have to possess one of them, which would cause the rest of them to attack your poor host, and then you would just jump out when the person died... possess someone else, and repeat until there was just one person left whooo... you would then POSSESS... and go on to the next group of enemies...

And there is no way you could have a "difficult" enemy because if there was someone who was stronger, the best strategy would be to POSSESS them and then YOU would be the stronger one... it was an ass-backwards game where the weaker the enemies the worse it was for you, but on the other hand, the easier they would then be to kill when you inevitably possess the stronger enemies...

The only difficult part of the game was the final battle with Satan because the little devil-yous could possess things too. Which is probably why I didn't finish the game, it was at that point that it actually became challenging in the slightest, and in fact, annoyingly so.

Hmmm

I enjoy the Fishy genre, and this is a good incarnation of it. I wonder, though, if the change is a positive one. Isn't the point of the Fishy genre to become the biggest fish? To have all of the fish, small or large, grow in proportion to you just makes playing the game sort of... well, I'm trying to think of a better word for pointless. I mean, it's not pointless, but if after 10 minutes of playing everything is still proportion to your size, then there's no achievment. You don't achieve anything, that is, power-wise from playing the game if everything grows in porportion to you. There's no sense of growth or superiority. Otherwise, I love Fishy games.

Thanks for such a useful review! I thought it would be increasingly harder to dodge fish when you have less space to move in.

Chinua Achebe's: Vultures Chinua Achebe's: Vultures

Very good

I really enjoyed that. The narration was very easy to listen to and soothing - a good voice for it. The silhouettes featuring the vultures were great and I enjoyed their addition to the loading screen. The shot of the skulls was also fantastic.

Overall it was great, but I'm not sold on the Psycho-esque ending. It seemed a little cheesey, to be honest, and not as serious as the rest of the piece.

The voice is actually Achebe himself.
Sorry about the ending.
The silouettes actually took me the longest.

Addictive and entertaining

This game is addictive and entertaining, but I found that I kept running out of moves too easily. I wish that there were more options available to rearrange the fruit or take back bad moves. I'd find myself 3 or 4 levels into the game, suddenly have no more moves, and then I'd lose and have to start all over again. Perhaps, even, adding a checkpoint or a save system so that one would not have to start the entire game over again after losing a level?

But not to say that the game is bad, I'm probably just bad at playing it. It probably deserves a lot more patient thought and watchfulness to make sure that I'm moving the right fruit so that I don't end up with a unwinnable situation. The only problem there, however, is that there's a time limit for the level (the setting sun) so it becomes very difficult to consider moves carefully. Is it too difficult, I wonder? I don't know. These sort of things are a delicate balance.

Moo-haha!

This is funny! But Penguins and Polar Bears never mingle. Not that, like, they're racist or anything... but Penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere (i.e. South Pole) and Polar Bears live in the Northern Hemisphere (i.e. North Pole)... so they live on opposite sides of the planet! Wizardy woo! Fun facts! But a cute little loop, I like it. It's tragidorable!

I didn't know that. But i thought it would be fun :p A penguin laughing at a dead Polar bear

Basic Sprite Animating

I don't know anything about animating sprites so I'm in no position to gauge whether or not the tutorial is accurate (that is, in an optimum way for sprite animating). However, I did find it very informative as I am a complete and total newb when it comes to animating.

On the other hand, I did find a lot of the tutorial to be a little wordy and without images it was hard to follow everything or make sense without actually performing the actions myself. Which I did not do, that is, so if there were any errors or omissions in your steps I'm afraid I am not able to judge.

Additionally, it seemed like it was a little large (3.3megs) considering the short length and minimal content. I suspect that it was the music that made the file so large as the graphic content was minimal.

Overall, kudos for helping others! Education is a great gift.

Number one?

Of all the games and movies on Newgrounds, isn't it saying something that a film in a series of films based fundamentally on senseless violence is ranked #1 for score? I mean, I appreciate the extensive and elaborate nuances of the violence, and even the skill of the author and the depth the series has (if still crudely shallow, not that that is a bad thing)... I like the series, and I think it is very good... but I mean, I wouldn't give it a 5 by far... I ranked it a 2, for "Nothing too new or interesting". Because after all, there is nothing very new in murderous (dare I say "stickmen") fighting. I was checking the Top 50 today, and when I saw this at the top, I said to myself, "WTF mate?". Very Good Movie=yes, Very Best Movie=shit no
